The problem is that Bollywood and the Indian media think that for every single role of a woman known for her beauty, Aish is the one and only choice (Jodhaa Bai, Umrao Jaan, Draupadi, Maharani Gayatri Devi, and a couple of others). Does she fit the bill to play Benazir Bhutto otherwise? NO. Not at all. Benazir had a steely strength, a fire and a larger-than-life personality about her that I simply don't see the fragile Ash portraying..(of course, we'll have to wait and see). Personality-wise, Shabana Azmi has that kind of steel (though not in terms of beauty). But my critique for now is: why should Ash be the ONLY possible choice, just because Benazir Bhutto was a breathtaking woman? I think the extent to which Indian media equate 'Ash' with 'beauty' has reached disproportionate heights now, in the sense that Ash is beauty, and beauty is Ash, and there is no room for anyone else sharing the 'beauty'-tag with her, seriously, and as a consumer, I am Ash-beauty-saturated. Benazir was so much more and I fear to think what is going to happen to this role.

Where in the world is Aishwarya Rai? Yes, I know that she is traveling to exotic places shooting on location for various movies. That is not what I mean. I am asking in a bigger sense.
For almost the past decade, Aish has held the Queen of Bollywood title. Her beauty burst on to the scene in the 90s with the Miss World contest, and her message to the rest of the globe was that there is beauty in India. Her talent unfolded in a handful of skillfully directed movies, and soon she was in every Indian movie magazine, on Time Magazine, in the news, and on the web. She became the most “googled” persons on the Internet, and clearly captured India’s heart and imagination. Her fame and her message took flight.
Her fans recognize that Aish possesses a combination of qualities coming together in that “perfect storm” that happens only once in a blue moon. She has a beauty that is magnetizing, intelligence, strength, vulnerability, savvy, and that added magic quality we simply call “je ne sai qua pas.” I would call it God’s favor.
Aishwarya has become something that is more than the parts put together. She is a star in that old fashioned Hollywood sense. That status is given to the few who have been catapulted into that rarefied air beyond the earth’s mundane atmosphere, and we mere mortals are looking up.
But where is the phenomenon of Aishwarya Rai now?
No doubt marriage, family, stage shows and films keep her busier than most of us. But because of her caliber of stardom, I look to Aish to expand her own image and brand. I want to see her take the message of beauty beyond the Bollywood dance numbers dressed in skimpy costumes perched on the heights of exotic cliffs. These days, where is her life’s message of beauty, real beauty?
Where can a star of her magnitude go to expand? Motherhood? Politics? I believe she, with her tremendous intelligence, talent, and grace, has the capacity to go deeper with the message of beauty. I hope that she has given it some deep thought and prayer. India and the world need to keep looking up.
Where in the world is Aishwarya Rai? Pray into that gift you have, Aish. We need that message of beauty in all of its forms.
